Aunt Lute is seeking an intern - Apply by May 7th

-About Us-

Aunt Lute Books is a nonprofit, multicultural feminist press in the Mission District of San Francisco. Since 1982, we have published women’s voices that are underrepresented in mainstream presses by virtue of race, ethnicity, sexuality, socio-economic background, age, and/or geographic location. Aunt Lute’s titles include fiction, poetry, and critical essays by Paula Gunn Allen, Gloria Anzaldúa, Judy Grahn, Ginu Kamani, Audre Lorde, and Alice Walker; and recent releases from Juliana Delgado Lopera, ire’ne lara silva, and Piyali Bhattacharya.

-Accessibility-

Our office is on the third floor, and is only accessible by stairs. The majority of our office is on the same level. However, there is one additional step to enter the back portion of our office. We have a basement warehouse which is accessible by stairs and freight elevator (which also reaches the ground and second floors). The office is located in the Mission District of San Francisco near a MUNI bus stop and a 1 mile walk from both 16th and 24th Street-Mission BART stations.

-The Position-

We are looking for a part-time operations intern who will have some production responsibilities. We seek candidates with the following skills and attributes:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, background in writing or copy-editing preferred

  • A passion for our mission and an interest in multicultural women’s literature

  • Careful attention to detail and strong organization skills

  • Flexibility, motivation, and the ability to work independently

  • Some familiarity with databases and spreadsheets for minor accounting and inventory needs

  • General proficiency with Windows 7 and 10, scanners, and fax machines

  • Ability to lift and maneuver up to 35 lbs. for short periods of time

The internship will span 6 months with a $300/month stipend, 12 hours/week. This internship provides an excellent opportunity to gain exposure to the operations and editorial aspects of book publishing, and experience with nonprofit work.

-Responsibilities-

Operations responsibilities consist of taking & processing orders and inventory maintenance, as well as general office tasks such as record keeping and answering phone calls. Packing orders and inventory maintenance often requires lifting boxes up to 20-35 pounds.

The productions aspect of the role will mostly involve proofreading and editing book text and grant applications. Previous grant experience is not required, but candidates should have strong writing skills and a grasp of Aunt Lute’s mission.

-When-

Beginning June, two days per week (not a Monday or Friday) from 11am-5pm, We are only open Tuesday - Thursday. Applications are due no later than May 7, and we will interview applicants on a rolling basis.
