On February 1st, ire'ne lara silva won the Artist Grant for literature from the National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures Fund! The grant was awarded to support the writing of ire'ne's first novel, Naci. Congratulations, ire'ne! 2017 Of Note
Judy Grahn
Poet and social theorist Judy Grahn was honored with two awards in 2017. Judy received an award honoring women in the military, sponsored by the Women Veterans Lions Club, in March and also received the Fred Cody Lifetime Achievement Award in Literature and Community Service in June.
My Good Judy Foundation was established in December 2017 as a residency program based in New Orleans for artists, poets, writers and scholars for the study of Judy's work.
Judy also held several readings of her works throughout the country in 2017, including at Manhattan's LGBT Center in September and UC Berkeley's New Narrative Conference in October.
Finally, look out for Judy's recently published and forthcoming writing, which you can find in Dark Matters, Strange Attractions, and Spoon/Knife 3, an anthology of neurodiverse writings edited by Nick Walker from Autonomous Press.
The Smithsonian Pays Tribute to Gloria Anzaldúa
On October 7, 2017, the Smithsonian Latino Center and the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian hosted Rembering Gloria Anzaldúa, a special Hispanic and LGBT History Month program to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Gloria's birth and the 30th anniversary of the publication of Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza, which was first published by Aunt Lute in 1987.
The program featured poet Raquel Gutiérrez, poet ire'ne lara silva, who co-edited Imaniman: Poets Writing in the Anzalduan Borderlands (published by Aunt Lute in 2016) with Dan Vera, and scholar AnaLouise Keating.
"A near full crowd in the huge auditorium at the National Museum of the American Indian...ire'ne opened her talk with an excerpt of one of Anzaldúa's letters. It was so powerful. Almost as if this figure who had been spoken about by the previous two speakers (ire'ne spoke last) became fully fleshed in the space through her words," Dan Vera said of the event.
